Old Tiffinian’s 4s 2–2 Dorking Cobblers

Old Tiffinian’s finally returned to action after a frustrating run of postponements, cancellations, and last-minute opposition dropouts that had left the squad wondering if football in 2026 had been quietly cancelled altogether. When a game finally did go ahead, it was against familiar opposition — league leaders Dorking Cobblers — the same side Tiffs had faced in their only other game of the year.

Despite the previous 3–0 defeat, there was confidence in the home side that the scoreline from that match hadn’t told the full story. Still, it was Dorking who started on the front foot. Tiffs struggled to keep hold of the ball early on, often resorting to hopeful clearances just to relieve the pressure while the visitors probed for openings. The Tiffs defence held firm through several attacks and efforts on goal, but eventually the pressure told. A defensive mix-up gifted the Dorking striker a free shot from six yards out, which he calmly slotted away to make it 1–0.

The goal seemed to wake Tiffs up. Chances began to come, with shots testing the goalkeeper and some scrappy attacking play around the box, but nothing quite fell kindly enough to bring the equaliser before half time.

After a slightly quieter-than-usual team talk, Tiffs came out for the second half with renewed intent — and it showed immediately. Wave after wave of attacks followed, with the home side dominating large spells and wondering how the ball still hadn’t found the back of the net.

Finally, with around 20 minutes remaining, the breakthrough came. A loose ball fell to Sean, who drove forward with purpose before threading a perfectly timed pass through to Tony. With the keeper advancing, Tony calmly chipped the ball over him and into the net to level the match at 1–1.

The game opened up from there. Tiffs continued to press while the defence stood strong against Dorking’s counters. But just as it looked like the sides might settle for a point, heartbreak struck with three minutes remaining. A cross into the box wasn’t properly cleared and fell kindly to a Dorking player, who was in exactly the right place to restore their lead at 2–1.

With time almost up, Tiffs refused to accept defeat. George surged up the pitch, driving at defenders before the ball eventually found its way to Sean, whose cross to the back post picked out Tony. Showing great awareness, Tony cut the ball back across goal where Euan arrived to tap home with the very last kick of the game.

Pandemonium followed — not just because it rescued a point, but because it was Euan’s first goal in 10 years… and what a moment to end the drought.

Full time: 2–2.

A deserved point against the league leaders, and while there was pride in the performance, there was also a sense that Tiffs might well have deserved all three.
