OTFC IVs vs Old Sedcopians IV

18th January 2020

Old Sedcopians IV 1 - 3 OTFC IVs

Debate over a winter break still rages in the premier league, with fans demanding entertainment while managers claim that it leads to burn out and more injuries, exemplified by Marcus Rashford literally breaking his back after carrying Man Utd all season.

However, in the depths of the AFC Division 6 (South) the rain in December and January has left the OTFC IV’s barely having kicked a ball for 4 weeks. Luckily, the Sedcopians home pitches were in fine condition, and the IV’s first game of 2020 was on.

An experienced IV’s team made up of both old new faces went into the game with high expectations, buoyed by the return of Flynn and Eggar after an eye wateringly fine inducing mid-season holiday.

The IV’s started off well, with the bulk of possession, although their rustiness was obvious with an inability to carve out any real scoring chances. Sedcopians made sure to take advantage and 20 minutes in to the 1st half took the lead. A corner was only half cleared and a Sedcopians striker picked up the loose ball on the edge of the area, barged his way into the box and buried his finish.

Fortunately, Tiffs didn’t let their heads drop and soon picked up where they left off, dominating possession and searching for the equaliser and just before half time they got their reward. Some calm work at the back allowed Tiffs to break down their left flank before the ball was quickly switched across the Sedcopians box and Flynn was on hand to calmly turn his man and slot home the leveller.

The half time team talk was dominated by discussion of working hard and not allowing the oppo any gifts and was inevitably followed by a very sloppy opening 5 minutes to the 2nd half. However, after weathering the storm Tiffs picked up from where they left off in the first half and pushed on in search of a winner. With 20 minutes played in the 2nd half a copy of the first goal put Tiffs in front for the first time. Starting at the back, Tiffs worked the ball down the left and after some work to work a cross Flynn was on hand to tap in at the back post for his second of the game. 10 minutes later Tiffs sealed the win when a corner led to a scrappy goalmouth scramble for Khaj to blast home from close range.

The IV’s were up and running in 2020 with a win, hopefully the first of many.
